Vicki Korn Joins Shattuck-St. Mary’s as Director of Synchronized Skating
Internationally known coach to launch program at college prep school.
Faribault, MN (March 15, 2010) – Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, located in Faribault, MN, has announced the addition of a synchronized figure skating program. Internationally recognized coach Vicki Korn will join the school to develop and direct the program, with plans to have a junior or senior level team compete in the 2010-11 season.
Vicki Korn brings extensive experience as a national, international and world synchronized skating coach. She most recently served as the Head Coach for the Synchronized Skating Program at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and was associated with the university’s skating program for 25 years. During her tenure, Miami University teams earned 11 national championships in the collegiate division, three national championships in the senior division and were World Silver Medalists in 2007. She was named Synchronized Skating Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1999 and the Professional Skaters Association (PSA) Coach of the Year in 2007. Vicki Korn is a PSA master rated coach in synchronized, program director and group. She is a senior rated coach in figures and freestyle. She serves the sport as a member of the USFS
Synchronized Skating Committee and is a frequent speaker at PSA and ISI conventions.
Shattuck-St. Mary’s synchronized figure skating program will feature the first residency team for middle and high school aged skaters in the world. Development of the elite level student-athlete is not new to Shattuck-St. Mary’s. In May of 2004, Sports Illustrated wrote, “…Shattuck-St. Mary’s is to hockey as Harvard is to law school,” reflecting on the nationally recognized hockey program currently thriving at the school. Shattuck-St. Mary’s Head of School Nicholas Stoneman offered this perspective: “With over 150 years of experience developing young men and women as they prepare for their college years, we have a true understanding of how to offer a program that blends rigorous academics with successful athletic specialization.”
Creating this type of highly specialized program requires the combination of an outstanding faculty with nationally recognized coaching professionals. Shattuck-St. Mary’s launched its figure skating program in 2006 under the direction of Diana Ronayne. Director of Figure Skating Operations, Tom Hickey, joined the staff in 2007. The program has 20 skaters representing seven countries in four National Championships and Junior International Grand Prix and World Junior events.
