Centers of Excellence Defined
In the early 1990s, Shattuck-St. Mary’s was a school trying to define its future.
Located on the campus was an indoor ice arena, which was a unique asset for the
School and the local community. With a strategic decision to take this facility and
build a hockey program to join it, SSM launched its first Center of Excellence.
Building a nationally recognized hockey program took time, dedication and
resources. However, in 2011 with 40 former Sabres drafted into the NHL and
seven former players representing the USA and Canada in the 2010 Olympic
Games, it is safe to say that the Sports Illustrated quote, “Shattuck-St. Mary’s
School is to high school hockey what Harvard is to law school,” is very accurate.
The Center of Excellence model has expanded under the leadership of Head of
School Nick Stoneman. In 2011, Shattuck-St. Mary’s can claim 10 Centers of
Excellence in athletics, the arts and academics. You can learn more about each
of these Centers of Excellence on specific pages.
