Learning Through Teaching

Seniors lead the way, mentor younger students through BioScience dissection.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s senior BioScience students had the opportunity to flip the classroom script on Thursday, October 20 as they assumed the role of teacher and helped younger students through the process of dissecting fresh pig hearts.

Thanks to the generosity of the Mayo Clinic’s Career Awareness Program and the Hormel Company in Austin, Minn., SSM’s BioScience students had the chance to explore cardiac anatomy first-hand through the dissection.

Students also dissected horse legs earlier this year, but for many, Thursday’s class represented their first hands-on exposure to the intricacies of a heart. The class also provided an excellent opportunity for seniors to reinforce their current understanding of the heart as they led younger SSM students through the dissection experience.
