Deep Dive and Dessert: The Healthy Obsessions of Craig Peck

January 19, 2017

Mr. Peck shares his thoughts–and M&M’s–with large group during weCreate event.

Director of The Major and Assistant Director of weCreate Craig Peck shared his healthy obsessions–and delicious peanut M&M’s–during the most recent Deep Dive and Dessert event on Wednesday, January 18 in the weCreate Center.

During the session, Mr. Peck chronicled his childhood as part of a large family growing up in rural northern Minnesota, initial disinterest in school, and wide array of interests, which include film, music, video games, running, astronomy, and teaching, among other pursuits.

Throughout much of his life, Mr. Peck has found himself pursuing what he calls healthy obsessions, and has always had the desire to learn everything he possibly can about an area of particular interest. Through each subject or skill he attempts to master, he has never been afraid to practice, try and fail, and ask questions of people more knowledgeable than he on a given subject.

Mr. Peck is a self-taught guitarist who has played in several bands, most recently the Rockford Mules, before enrolling in graduate school to become an educator. He has co-written five full-length albums as well as several EPs and singles, and his band’s music has been featured on Criminal Minds, MTV’s Punked, Buckwild, Catfish, and Road Rules as well as various other reality-television shows. He continues to play the occasional show and regularly writes music.

He currently leads The Major, a Shattuck-St. Mary’s Center of Excellence that allows students to pursue their studies in a specific area of personal interest. Under Mr. Peck’s guidance and instruction, students conduct high-level research, present their findings during several school-wide poster sessions, and complete a comprehensive project portfolio by the time they graduate from SSM.
