Our Mission

As a community, Shattuck-St. Mary's School guides young people to be strong in character, mind, body and spirit for a life of learning and service.

Separated from the Upper School campus by a 10-minute walk or a 3-minute van ride, the Middle School offers a small close-knit community environment for our younger students. With average class sizes of 10 students, our 6th, 7th and 8th graders benefit from one-on-one instruction and individual attention. The St. Mary’s campus offers a distinct academic and social program, and Middle School students also frequently head to the Upper School campus for advanced courses—giving them the advantage of accelerating in a favorite area of study. Our course curriculum is strong and varied, providing students with outstanding educational outlets and in-depth preparation for high school.

Our Middle School is home away from home for international students, and our small campus community fosters tolerance, acceptance, friendships with people from many different places and a true sense of shared experience. This diversity of background and culture provides a rewarding challenge for our Middle School students to learn, grow and broaden their understanding of the world.

St. Mary’s also houses our 6th through 10th grade boarding girls and our 6th through 9th grade boarding boys. The common bond of being away from home is a strong start to life-long friendships. Integration of the youngest students and the 9th and 10th graders provides leadership opportunities for the older boarders, role models for our younger boarders, and ties together the Middle and Upper divisions of the School; a tie that is reinforced in our multi-grade-level SSM Families.

As you review the many pages of our website, we hope that you will also consider a visit to our Middle School Campus to see our students in action. You might also find the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Middle School an incredible place to start the journey into your high school education.

Shattuck-St. Mary's School community, with its strong commitment to protecting human rights and dignity, does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, national or ethnic origin in its admissions and scholarship programs, the administration of its educational, athletic, or other school programs, or its employment practices.
