Spring Science Saturdays @SSM Announced
Older elementary and middle school students interested in science or technology are encouraged to register for one of several upcoming “Science Saturday@SSM” events this spring. The programs target 9-13 year olds that would like a meaningful, hands-on lab investigation experience.
For the first time, topic several topic-specific Science Saturdays are being offered along with our popular Science Saturday Sampler.
“This is an excellent chance for young minds interested in science and technology to spend time doing real lab work in an advanced setting,” said John Blackmer, director of the STEM@SSM program. “Every activity leads the students through the process of inspiration, creativity, and innovation.”
Sampler (April 7; 9am-3pm): A full day in the science labs of SSM exploring chemistry, life science, physics, and ecology!
Cost: $55
NEW! – Dedicated Courses (9am-noon, cost: $35 each, choose any)
- Chemistry Creativity: Don some goggles and solve the mystery (April 21)
- Microscopic Menagerie: A fascinating peeking at life under a lens (April 28)

They’re back to save the day!
Students looking for an opportunity to explore their creative nature in the realm of science are invited to join the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Engineering department for a Rescue Robots series that will run on Thursdays evenings beginning in April.
Participants work to create robots of their own designs, learning to both program the robots “brain” as well as construct the functional parts as they best see fit.
“Students will be using the Lego NXT robotics platform to build, program, and test robots of their own design to conquer simulated rescue missions,” said Dan Ray, SSM engineering instructor and robotics coach. “Our program will be uniquely flexible to challenge students with many different learning styles.”

3D Design and Printing
Sure, you’ve typed and printed a document, but how about printing an actual solid plastic item you designed yourself on a computer? Perhaps a chess piece, a fishing lure, a picture stand, or a wild and crazy machine limited only by your own imagination?
Using SolidWorks 3D design software and SSM’s 3D printer and laser cutter, the results of your creativity are no longer confined to a 2D picture. Design work and rapid prototyping are combined in a problem solving theme. This program is uniquely flexible and challenges students of all ages and learning styles. Basic computer skills are all that is required.
Cutting edge high tech! Learn 3D design software and rapid prototyping combined in a problem solving theme. Very few schools in the world offer this opportunity!

Faribault, MN (August 2011) – Students of all ages fascinated by science, technology, and innovation are welcome to join a field trip of like-minded students and families to experience Young Scientist Roundtable events this fall in Wayzata.
Young Scientist Roundtable events are produced by a coalition of school and STEM programs in the Twin Cities area and bring an array of fascinating presentations to students of all ages, from elementary through adult. Regardless of the topic, speakers are chosen for their engaging presentation style, ability to connect with students on an intellectual level, and their encouragement of scientific curiosity. This fall’s topics range from innovative medical therapies for dogs to human brain tumors and the immune system.
A registration flyer with dates, costs, and other information can be obtained by visiting http://www.s-sm.org/stem or calling the STEM@SSM program at 507/333-1562.
“This is an excellent chance for young minds interested in science and technology to listen to innovative scientists share their inspirations and innovations,” said John Blackmer, director of the STEM@SSM program. “I am always amazed at how the presenters make such advanced scientific topics understandable to even elementary school students.”
These courses represent the latest offerings of Shattuck-St. Mary’s new STEM@SSM outreach programming, which strives to engage learners throughout the local and neighboring communities in science, technology, engineering and math pursuits. For more information, contact STEM@SSM program director John Blackmer by email at jblackmer@s-sm.org or at 507/333-1562.
