Sagel and Melong had to come up big on different occasions as neither game saw an overabundance of goals, both ended 1-0 in favor of Shattuck. Golfers in Top 10 at TPC Deere Run

Phillip Baumberger shoots 77 in opening round of TPC Deer Run
Nathan Zhao shot opening round of 77 at TPC Deere Run
Both SSM Golfers competing in the Plantations Junior Tour at TPC Deere Run fired an opening round 77 to sit within the top 10 of the 47 player field in the Boys 15 – 17 age group.  Nathan Zhao and Phillip Baumberger tied at the end of the round but had very different experiences on the course.  Zhao teed off first in the 9:36 group and was 1 under par though three holes and feeling pretty good until a triple bogey at the number 5 hole.  “I pushed my drive a little right but was still in the fairway and needed to hit a big left to right cut to reach the green on the sharp tree lined dogleg.  I hit my second in the bunker and before I knew it, I was 2 putting for a triple,” Zhao recalled.  Nathan was able to regain his focus and finish the front with a 39.  Zhao continued to play strong and keep his focus until two bogeys on 16 and 17.  He hit two great shots on the tough par 4 18th hole before lipping out a 14 foot birdie attempt.
Baumberger played pretty solid all day except for 3 double bogeys .  He had 14 pars and one birdie on the remaining 15 holes which is pretty consistent.  The TPC Deere Run plays host to the John Deere Classic which is annual stop on the PGA Tour so the course can jump up and be penalizing at any given moment.  Both golfers are within striking distance to make a run at the win.  Coach Higdon, Zhao, and Baumberger all agreed that anyone within 7 shots of the lead heading into the final round have a chance.  The course is fair and accessible so if they can get out and post a number, and put the pressure on the leaders, anything can happen.  Baumberger tees off at 10:46 on Sunday while Zhao tees off in the group behind him at 10:54.

Girls Travel to Virginia for Jefferson Cup

Both the U18 and the U17 Shattuck St. Mary’s Girls teams departed school earlier this week for their participation in the Jefferson Cup in Richmond, Virginia. The players and coaches came back early from their spring break to have a few training sessions before their 24 hour bus ride. The teams departed on Tuesday evening in order to get to Virginia with enough time to recover before their first game on Friday afternoon. Coach David Linenberger said “Traditionally we are a bit rusty coming off of our schools three week long spring break, but we always improve with each game at the Jefferson Cup.” The Jefferson Cup is a great event for the girls program, “last year we did very well as U17’s, so I hope that it will be the same this year.” This tournament holds even more importance because it is the first step in the preparation for State Cup in May. Despite the long bus ride, traveling to the Jefferson Cup gives the Shattuck teams the opportunity to face opponents outside of Minnesota and the surrounding area. According to Coach Linenberger, it is always a plus for the players to see the level of play through out the country from teams in different states. The coaching staff is excited to see where they are at this point in the year and how they stack up against the teams in the Jefferson Cup.   Jefferson Cup U18 schedule: Group A 3/16/12: (4:20pm)   SSM vs. Jersey United Spartans White (NJ) 3/17/12: (1:00pm) SSM vs. Arundel Vipers (MD) 3/18/12: (11:20am) SSM vs. Oakwood (CT)   Jefferson Cup U17 schedule: Group B 3/16/12: (12:40pm) Ashburn SC Premier Gold (VA) vs. SSM 3/17/12: (2:40pm) Bethesda SC Storm (MD) vs. SSM  3/18/12: (9:30am) South Central Premier Select (CT) vs. SSM

SSM COE Golfers Dominate at TPC Sawgrass

Curwin watches his approach on #16 Zhao accepts his award for winning the tournament! Brickey tees off on #18 Baumberger eyes his putt on the famous #17

SSM Golfers finished strong on the final day of the Plantations Junior Tour event at TPC Sawgrass.  The final round was played on the Stadium Course which plays host to the PGA Tour’s Players Championship.  Nathan Zhao fired a final round 80 which allowed him to win the tournament by 2 shots in the Boys 14-19 age group.  Nathan’s round started out rough with a front nine score of 43 and trailed David Baker of North Carolina by 3 shots going into the final 9 holes.  Zhao buckled down and finished strong with a 1 over par 37 on the final nine holes to take the crown by 2 shots over Baker.  This is Nathan’s first win in a national junior tour event.  Phillip Baumberger finished just as strong as Zhao with a back nine score of 38 to follow up his 48 on the front nine and was able to edge out fellow SSM golfer, Jake Curwin, by one shot who took 4th place.  Sydney Brickey was able to move up a few spots by shooting her best competitive round with a final score of 87.

For all of you wondering about the famous #17 island green at Sawgrass, SSM golfers tamed it pretty well.  Each of the golfers hit the green on their first shot, which is a great accomplishment.  #18 did jump up and get the best of Sydney and Jake but Phillip was able to birdie the 18th with 3 great shots.  The golfers will have a break in competition until February 17th when they head west to California.

The sun was shining and the temperature was warmer than Faribault, but the winds were brutal and wreaked havoc on the junior golfers playing in the Plantations Junior Golf Tour at the University of Kentucky Club in Lexington, KY.  Our golfers stayed strong and battled the 4o mph gusts, an excellent test in facing adversity.  Four SSM golfers took to the course and Junior, Phillip Baumberger, carded an 81 on day one and followed up with an 82 on Sunday to finish in 12th place of the 59 boys aged 14 to 19 battling for an AJGA tournament exemption.  Junior, Jake Curwin, shot a final round 84 after an opening round 83 to finish in 18th place.  Freshman, Nathan Zhao, shot an 85 both rounds to finish in 27th place.  Junior Sydney Brickey, competing in the girls 14 to 19 division, matched Baumberger’s 12th place finish with a final round score of 89. Brickey bettered her first round score by 6 shots.  SSM golfers are taking a four week break in competition before heading to Florida to play at the TPC at Sawgrass in another Plantations Tour Event December 17th and 18th.  Coach Higdon was happy with the way the players competed all weekend and persevered.  “It was a true test of physical strength and mental stamina playing against the gusts of wind all weekend.  Our golfers represented themselves well and fought strong ’til the end.  I saw many juniors giving up and complaining about the wind, but not our players.  We will continue to practice and grow over the next 4 weeks and look for a strong showing in FL.”
