Weekend Review: March 17th-18th

It was a successful weekend back for both the boys and girls soccer programs at Shattuck-St. Mary’s. Two of the boy’s teams traveled to Milwaukee and Chicago to play in two Development Academy games, while the U18YS team had two friendly home games. The girls competed in the Jefferson Cup in Richmond, VA over the weekend.
Girls Review: Jefferson Cup In their opening game of the 2012 Jefferson Cup, the U18 girls took down Jersey United in convincing fashion, winning 5-1. After a three week spring break and four weeks since their last game, Coach Linenberger was very pleased with his teams performance. “We did well keeping possession and created numerous goal scoring chances. We could have easily scored 10-12 goals” said Linenberger. In their second game of the tournament, SSM came out against the Arundel Vipers and won another convincing game 4-0. According to Linenberger, “The second game of a three game weekend is always the most difficult and we were slow to start. We kept the ball and scored on the chances we created. We did well to get a shutout.” Playing a third game in three days, for the time since January, the Shattuck girls came out against Oakwood a bit tired and heavy legged. Oakwood, a strong team who won both of their first two games, put the pressure on Shattuck in the first half. “We had a good talk at half-time and really responded to play a very good second half. Though we lost 0-2, we played well, kept care of the ball, showed good fight, spirit and intensity” said Linenberger. Game #1 : 1-0 Powell (22. Graybill, M.); 2-0 Fredette (30. Moss); 3-0 Ulrich (49. Sparrman)3-1 (60.); 4-1 Powell (69. Lundberg); 5-1 Powell (79. Goulet) Game #2: 1-0 Powell (20. Ulrich); 2-0 Powell (37. Graybill, S.); 3-0 Patterson (62.); 4-0 Powell (80. Moss) Game #3: 0-1 (42.); 0-2 (50)
Boys Review Saturday: The U18DA and the U16DA teams traveled to Milwaukee on Saturday to take on FC Milwaukee in their first Development Academy games of 2012. In the U18 game, Shattuck went down 0-1 early on, but soon responded with a goal from sophomore standout Ricky Lopez . Shattuck put the game out of reach at the end of the first half, with two goals coming in three minutes for Patrick Barnes and John Lujano . The game finished 3-1. In the U16 game, the trend continued with Shattuck going down 0-1 to FC Milwaukee, but storming back to finish the game 6-2. Three players doubled their goal tallies in this game. Heath Honold , Steve Eneme , and Neal Usry all netted a pair of goals. In the U18YS game, Shattuck took on Valley United from Minneapolis in a friendly game at home. The game started off with much of the possession going to the home team, although Valley United put loads of pressure on Shattuck two outside-backs. The teams went into halftime tied at 0-0. Substitute, Karl Frisk scored a back-post header ten minutes into the second half. That was the game winner, as Shattuck won 1-0. Sunday: The U18DA traveled to Chicago to take on the Chicago Sockers in their second DA game of the weekend. Not much to tell from this game as it was even across the board, with Shattuck edging the Sockers in scoring opportunities, but never converting. The game finished 0-0 with Dary Dewalt getting the shutout for Shattuck. The U16DA team was not as lucky to come out of Chicago with a point, as they lost to the Sockers 0-1. In a well played game, Shattuck gave up a goal about halfway through the second half. Shattuck had their fair share of scoring opportunities, but failed to convert. The best two chances came from Jose Ojeda in the 30th minute, who saw his shot sail over from close range, and in stoppage time of the second half Corey Cadeau just missed a diving header at the back post. Back in Minnesota it was a different story for the U18YS team who took on a weaker opponent in CC United, in their second friendly of the weekend. The scoring was opened up halfway through the first have and didn’t stop until the final whistle at 7-0. Next up for the the U18YS squad is a friendly this weekend against Minneapolis United, and then it is on to the 2012 Dallas Cup.

Girls Travel to Virginia for Jefferson Cup
Both the U18 and the U17 Shattuck St. Mary’s Girls teams departed school earlier this week for their participation in the Jefferson Cup in Richmond, Virginia. The players and coaches came back early from their spring break to have a few training sessions before their 24 hour bus ride. The teams departed on Tuesday evening in order to get to Virginia with enough time to recover before their first game on Friday afternoon. Coach David Linenberger said “Traditionally we are a bit rusty coming off of our schools three week long spring break, but we always improve with each game at the Jefferson Cup.” The Jefferson Cup is a great event for the girls program, “last year we did very well as U17’s, so I hope that it will be the same this year.” This tournament holds even more importance because it is the first step in the preparation for State Cup in May. Despite the long bus ride, traveling to the Jefferson Cup gives the Shattuck teams the opportunity to face opponents outside of Minnesota and the surrounding area. According to Coach Linenberger, it is always a plus for the players to see the level of play through out the country from teams in different states. The coaching staff is excited to see where they are at this point in the year and how they stack up against the teams in the Jefferson Cup. Good Play Continues in California
Golfers wrapped up in Palm Desert, CA with many positives coming from the trip out west. The two-day tournament had weather conditions at each end of the spectrum. The first day was absolutely perfect with temperatures near 75 degrees and no breeze at all. The second round was a lot different with temperatures not getting over 60 degrees and the wind gusting in upwards of 40 mph. Nathan Zhao continued his strong play after coming off a victory in his last tournament this past December with a 2nd place finish in the Boys 13-15 age group. Zhao was tied with two other golfers for 2nd place after the first round and was only one shot off of the leader. He shot a 2nd round 84 that was good enough for sole possession of second place after completion of the tournament and two shots back of the leader. The Classic Club can be known for its tough playing conditions as it used to be a host course for the Bob Hope Classic but the brutally tough conditions caused the PGA Tour to reconsider and move to another location.
In the Boys 16-19 age group Jake Curwin made a considerable jump on the leader board during the second round. He started out the final day in 34th position with an opening round 83 but was able to keep his focus and come out hot on the final day. Curwin posted the 3rd lowest score of the day out of the 100 junior golfers that took to the course with a 79 in the brutally tough conditions. With that great final round he was able to jump 20+ positions on the leader board and finish in 13th place. Phillip Baumberger also moved up on the leader board on the final day with a round of 86 after an opening round 87 which put him in 33rd place overall.
Sydney Brickey finished in 13th place in the Girls 13-18 age group after fighting hard and holding her composure. She had an opening round 93 then followed that up with a final round 102.

Shattuck- St. Mary’s wins NIT
Teddy Blueger scores highlight-reel goal, adds two assists in win over Minnesota Red

Taking risks has never been an issue for senior forward Teddy Blueger of Shattuck-St. Mary’s.
At age 15 Blueger decided to uproot himself and travel across the ocean to hit the ice for Shattuck-St. Mary’s. The goal was to play against better competition in the sport he loved. Originally from Riga, Latvia, Blueger decided southern Minnesota was the best place for him to grow as a hockey player.
Now at age 17, Blueger is a key member of his team’s dominant offense that pulled out a 5-3 championship victory in the Bauer NIT on Sunday, Nov. 6, at New Hope Arena in New Hope.
In the second period, with his team up by a goal, Blueger decided to take another risk.
After catching a pass from teammate Ryan Schwalbe, Blueger dashed into the zone and cut to the middle of the ice, right into the teeth of the Minnesota Red defense. He split the two defenders, moved the puck to his backhand and flipped it over goaltender Bryan Nies of Grand Forks Red River to push the score to 2-0.
It was a bold, “in-your-face” type of goal that revved up both the crowd and his teammates.
Although his skill clearly transferred from Latvia, many things have been different for Blueger since he began living in the U.S.
“Life in general is just a lot different,” Blueger said. “Just how people go about their business. But I like it a lot here.”
Some of the differences he’s noticed have been on the ice as well.
“Intensity and the speed of the game,” Blueger said were very different in the U.S. “How hard guys work. The ice is definitely smaller, so the game is a little faster.”
During the course of the Upper Midwest High School Elite Hockey League, Blueger racked up 26 points (8 goals and 18 assists) on a team that went 13-1-1. His distribution abilities are well known — and much appreciated by his coach, Tom Ward.

“He sees plays, he sees people, and he’s a very deft passer,” Ward said. “He sees the game in a way that most people don’t see the game.
“Teddy Blueger is a very, very, very skillful player. To his credit he’s a hard-working skill player, so if you’ve got a player that’s got skill and he’s a hard worker, then you got a chance to have a good player. Teddy’s really maturing as a player. His game is rounding out and he’s learning to play in his own end and be reliable all over the rink.”
Coach Ward was pleased with Blueger’s performance, and his team’s performance as a whole, after winning the Bauer NIT title.
“Learning how to win championships is a learned trait,” Ward said. “I think you need to learn how to play when the cheese is binding a little bit and the pressure is on. And every game you can get in like this really helps.”
Shattuck-St. Mary’s is looking at the victory as a stepping stone to future success during the course of its long season.
“We are continuing to grow as a group, but we’ve got a lot of hockey to play,” Ward said. “We haven’t even had a snowflake yet and we gotta play until the middle of April. I really like the way we’re playing after 20 games.”
Blueger was happy for a little revenge. Shattuck-St. Mary’s lost in the title game last season 5-4 to Minnesota White in overtime, something that didn’t sit very well with the team.
“It definitely means a lot going forward,” Blueger said.
