SSM Golfers in Middle of Pack

SSM Golfer crowd the middle of the leader board at the FCWT Plantation Inn event in Crystal River, FL.  The golfers battled wind gusts all day long and couldn’t really get anything consistent going.  Jake Curwin (2013) and Camden Nierman (2012) are both tied for 15th place after each shot 75 in the opening round of the two-day event.  Nathan Zhso (2015) is one shot behind his teammates and in 22nd place after finishing with a 76.  Sophia Hill (2015) is in 7th place after an opening round 80 and Shane Hoben is in 10th in the Boys 13-15 age group by shooting an 83.  Sam Eisenhuth (2014) shot an opening round 82 and Sydney Brickey (2013) an 86 and look to make up some ground in day 2.  There were some highlights on the day when Camden Nierman started out on fire and was -2 through 10 holes and was fighting for the lead.  A string of bogeys coming in dropped him down a bit but he looks to stay strong all round tomorrow and shoot under par making a run at the leaders.  Jake Curwin and Nathan Zhao were even par on holes 1 through 9 holes but the back nine got the best of them as well.  Sophia Hill played consistent all day as she only had one double bogey on the day and was able to make 2 birdies.  Shane Hoben played consistent as well but just wasn’t able to throw any birdies into his round.  SSM Golfers get started at 7:39am EST on Sunday and all are eager to get back on the course to lower their scores on Sunday.  There is a chance of rain tomorrow and this course offers the opportunity to shoot some good scores and they can apply some pressure with some good scores.

SSM Golfers Top Overall Standings

{}

Even though the SSM Golf Center of Excellence is taking the weekend off, its golfers are still making headlines.  SSM golfers sit in the top two spots in both the Boys 16-19 age group and the Girls 13-18 age group in the national standings for the FCWT Golf Tour.  Jake Curwin holds the top spot in the 16-19 age group with his victory this past weekend at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club, his 2nd place finish at Purdue University, and his 13th place finish at Notre Dame.  He is leading SSM teammate Nathan Zhao who holds the second spot by 812.5 points.  Zhao has put together a solid fall with a pair of 3rd place finishes at Purdue University and the University of Notre Dame combined with a 13th place at Cog Hill.  Camden Nierman sits in 5th place in the overall standings with a 4th place finish at Cog Hill and his 6th place finish at Purdue.  Sam Eisenhuth is in 8th place overall with his best finish coming at Notre Dame in 11th place.

Sydney Brickey has the top honors in the Girls 13-18 age group and leads fellow SSM Teammate Sophia Hill by 200 points.  Brickey’s latest tournament at Purdue was her first victory at a national tournament and combined with her 3rd place finish at Notre Dame is able to give her the edge.  Sophia Hill is in 2nd place overall with a pair of 3rd place finishes at Cog Hill and Purdue University combined with her 6th place finish at Notre Dame.  Nicole Pelling is in 8th place overall with a 4th place finish at Cog Hill and a 5th place finish at Purdue University.

Shane Hoben is in 14th place overall in the Boys 13-15 age group.  His finishes of 5th place at Cog Hill, 9th at Purdue, and 11th at Notre Dame are keeping him in contention in that age group.  Shane is coming into his own and continually improving and is looking to be in contention for a victory very soon in the horizon.  Golfers are taking a little break from the FCWT Tour and will be competing next on that tour at Mission Hills, CA on December 1st and 2nd.  SSM Golfers will be competing in their first Plantations Tour Event of the season this next weekend at the University of Kentucky on November 10th and 11th.

Curwin gets FCWT victory at Cog Hill

{}

Jake Cuwin captures the FCWT Cog Hill event by 3 shots.

Jake Curwin captures his first FCWT victory and the 2nd in two weeks for the Golf CoE by winning the event at Cog Hill Dubsdread course by 3 shots over the nearest competitor.  The course was playing as difficult as possible with the blistering cold temperatures and the 30 mph wind.  Curwin entered the final day in 2nd place and came out blazing with a 76 to easily take the crown.  He played steady all day with 3 birdies and the round could have been much lower had it not been for 3 lip out putts within 6 feet.  Jake has been playing solid all fall with a 13th place at Notre Dame, 2nd place last week at Purdue and now the win this week in Chicago.  Camden Nierman wasn’t far behind Curwin with a final round of 77 to finish in 4th place just one shot out of 2nd.  Nierman was even par through his first 13 holes and was looking to challenge for the victory but had a little trouble on his last 5 holes.  Nathan Zhao finished the tournament in 12th place while Sam Eisenhuth ended up in 24th.  Shane Hoben who was playing in the boys 13-15 age group shot a two day total of 166 and a final round 82 to finish in 5th place.  Shane ranked 2nd all weekend with his tremendous par 4 scoring performance.  Sophia Hill and Nicole Pelling competed in the girls 13-18 age group and finished 3rd and 4th respectively.  The Golf CoE takes this next weekend off before heading to Lexington, KY for the Plantations Tour event held at the University of Kentucky Wildcat Course on November 10th and 11th.

Brickey Earns First FCWT Victory at Purdue University

{}

Sydney Brickey holds her Champion Flag after winning the FCWT event at Purdue University.

Sydney Brickey (2013) carded the lowest competitive round of her career with a 75 (+3) to earn the first FCWT victory for the SSM Golf Center of Excellence.  Combined with her opening round of 80 Brickey finished the tournament with a score of 155 which gave her a 10 shot cushion over he nearest competitor.  She played steady all day with 2 birdies and 5 bogeys.  Sophia Hill (2015) finished with a final round 92 combined with her opening round 78 to wrap up 3rd place.  Nicole Pelling (2014) shot her second consecutive 96 which gave her sole possesion of 5th place.

On the boys side Jake Curwin (2013) shot his second consecutive round of 74 (+2) which jumped him up the leader board to finish in 2nd place, just two shots off the leader.  Curwin played just as steady as Brickey by carding 4 bogeys and 2 birdies during his round.  Teammate Nathan Zhao (2015) who was playing beside Curwin finished with a 75 (+3) to finish in 3rd place just one shot behind Curwin.  Zhao lipped out an 18 foot birdie on the final hole that would have tied him with Curwin.  The two were also playing with Camden Nierman (2012) who finished with an 81 today after his opening round of 73.  Nierman finished in 6th place of the 61 player field.  Sam Eisenhuth (2014) who was playing just ahead of his teammates on Sunday shot a final round 84 after firing the 2nd lowest round of the tournament on Saturday (72) to finish in 13th place.

Shane Hoben (2016) cempeting in the boys 13-15 age group continued his streak of bettering every competitive round this year with a final score of 80 on Sunday which was 2 shots better than his opening round of 82 on Saturday.  Hoben finished in 9th place of this highly competitive age group.

Great job to all of the SSM golfers this weekend at Purdue.  4 top three finishes!!!!  The Golf CoE won’t have much time to rest as they will head to Chicago on October 25th to compete in the FCWT tournament at the famous Dubsdread Cog Hill golf course on the 27th and 28th.

SSM Golfers crowd the leaderboard after day 1 of FCWT Purdue

Saturday, October 21, 2012 was a great day for the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Golf Center of Excellence.  The FCWT staff and all the participants took notice to SSM golfers crowding the top of the boys and girls leaderboards at the FCWT event being played at Purdue University’s renowned Kampen Golf Course.  Sophia Hill (2015) sits in 1st place after the opening round of the event with a score of 78 (+6).  She was able to better teammate Sydney Brickey (2013) by two shots who sits in sole possesion of 2nd place as she shot an 80 (+8).  Nicole Pelling (2014) is in 4th place with a score of 96 in her first event of the season.

Sam Eisenhuth (2014) shot the SSM low round of the day with an even par 72 and is in sole possesion of 2nd place only one shot out of the lead.  “The round could have easily been in the 60′s if it weren’t for two double bogeys” said Eisenhuth after completing his round with two teammates watching intensly.  The two golfers watching were Nathan Zhao (2015) and Jake Curwin (2013) who had just completed their rounds a few groups ahead and both shot rounds of 74 (+2) and are tied for 5th place.  Finishing just behind Eisenhuth was Camden Nierman (2012) who put together his most solid round of this young season with a 73 (+1) in which he fired a -1 (35) on his back nine.  Shane Hoben continues his streak of bettering every round scoring wise this year with an 82 (+10).  Shane was able to card an opening 9 holes of 38 (+2) and looks to break into the 70′s in tomorrows round.

Please visit the FCWT website at http://www.fcwtgolf.com/index.shtml for a great story and to follow the results during tomorrow’s final round.  You can also access the FCWT press release at http://www.seopressreleases.com/shattuckst-marys-junior-golfers-shine-fcwt-purdue/44880 .  The first Shattuck golfers will tee off at 9:42 EST on Sunday.

Golfers in Top 10 at TPC Deere Run

Phillip Baumberger shoots 77 in opening round of TPC Deer Run
Nathan Zhao shot opening round of 77 at TPC Deere Run
 Both SSM Golfers competing in the Plantations Junior Tour at TPC Deere Run fired an opening round 77 to sit within the top 10 of the 47 player field in the Boys 15 – 17 age group.  Nathan Zhao and Phillip Baumberger tied at the end of the round but had very different experiences on the course.  Zhao teed off first in the 9:36 group and was 1 under par though three holes and feeling pretty good until a triple bogey at the number 5 hole.  “I pushed my drive a little right but was still in the fairway and needed to hit a big left to right cut to reach the green on the sharp tree lined dogleg.  I hit my second in the bunker and before I knew it, I was 2 putting for a triple,” Zhao recalled.  Nathan was able to regain his focus and finish the front with a 39.  Zhao continued to play strong and keep his focus until two bogeys on 16 and 17.  He hit two great shots on the tough par 4 18th hole before lipping out a 14 foot birdie attempt.
Baumberger played pretty solid all day except for 3 double bogeys .  He had 14 pars and one birdie on the remaining 15 holes which is pretty consistent.  The TPC Deere Run plays host to the John Deere Classic which is annual stop on the PGA Tour so the course can jump up and be penalizing at any given moment.  Both golfers are within striking distance to make a run at the win.  Coach Higdon, Zhao, and Baumberger all agreed that anyone within 7 shots of the lead heading into the final round have a chance.  The course is fair and accessible so if they can get out and post a number, and put the pressure on the leaders, anything can happen.  Baumberger tees off at 10:46 on Sunday while Zhao tees off in the group behind him at 10:54.

Good Play Continues in California

Jake Curwin tees off #18 at The Classic Club.
Sydney Brickey eyes her putt.
Nathan Zhao watches his tee shot.
Nathan with his 2nd place finish.
Phillip Baumberger accelerates through a tee shot.

Golfers wrapped up in Palm Desert, CA with many positives coming from the trip out west.  The two-day tournament had weather conditions at each end of the spectrum.  The first day was absolutely perfect with temperatures near 75 degrees and no breeze at all.  The second round was a lot different with temperatures not getting over 60 degrees and the wind gusting in upwards of 40 mph.   Nathan Zhao continued his strong play after coming off a victory in his last tournament this past December with a 2nd place finish in the Boys 13-15 age group.  Zhao was tied with two other golfers for 2nd place after the first round and was only one shot off of the leader.  He shot a 2nd round 84 that was good enough for sole possession of second place after completion of the tournament and two shots back of the leader.  The Classic Club can be known for its tough playing conditions as it used to be a host course for the Bob Hope Classic but the brutally tough conditions caused the PGA Tour to reconsider and move to another location.

In the Boys 16-19 age group Jake Curwin made a considerable jump on the leader board during the second round.  He started out the final day in 34th position with an opening round 83 but was able to keep his focus and come out hot on the final day.  Curwin posted the 3rd lowest score of the day out of the 100 junior golfers that took to the course with a 79 in the brutally tough conditions.  With that great final round he was able to jump 20+ positions on the leader board and finish in 13th place.  Phillip Baumberger also moved up on the leader board on the final day with a round of 86 after an opening round 87 which put him in 33rd place overall.

Sydney Brickey finished in 13th place in the Girls 13-18 age group after fighting hard and holding her composure.  She had an opening round 93 then followed that up with a final round 102.

U18YS Finish Weekend on a High Note

The U18YS team comes home from the CASL Showcase in North Carolina with a win and two loses. The squad learned a lot from the weekend playing in an older U19 age group. The boys dropped the first two games against SAC Premier and Dixie Lions Athletic, but finished the weekend with a win against host CASL Elite. On Friday the boys took on SAC Premier out of Maryland. Right off the bat the game was not in the sabres favor. They had three starters go down with injuries in the first half. They snuck out of the first half only being down 1-0. The second half was a different story when SAC capitalized on three quality chances, finishing the game 4-0. The next morning, the sabres took on Dixie Lions Athletic out of Canada. Playing in the U19 division, the sabres were clearly the younger team according to size. The Canadian team came out strong, but the Shattuck players were up for the challenge. Dixie Lions scored right before halftime off of a corner kick. With the sabres not finding many chances in the second half, that is how the game ended at 1-0 in favor of Dixie Lions Athletics. Sunday ended up being the best day for the Shattuck St. Mary’s team so they continued to get stronger throughout the weekend. They took on a CASL Elite team out of North Carolina, and the host’s of the showcase. The game was evenly matched from the start, but the sabres had more of the ball and better chances on goal. Late in the second half, with four minutes left, top goal scorer, Neal Usry came up big for the sabres, slotting home a through ball from newcomer Geoffrey Dee . Next up for the U18YS team is the Shattuck St. Mary’s College Showcase in Faribault, MN.
