U18YS Defending the State Cup Title
On a rainy Sunday morning, the U18YS boys sealed their place in the Minnesota State Cup Final. This group of players will be defending their U17 State Cup Championship against the same St. Croix team that they beat in the 2011 finals. The Sunday morning State Cup Semi-Final game started out slow against a well organized MTA squad. Both teams were feeling each other out and trying to get used to the conditions. Shattuck’s Neal Usry had a quality change ten minutes into the game, but saw his effort just go wide of the post. MTA controlled the last ten minutes of the first half, but were unable to score and the teams went into halftime tied at 0-0. After talking over a few tactical changes at halftime, SSM came out in the second half dominated from the beginning. After a handful of unsuccessful corner kicks, and chances on goal, Emil Gonsalvez broke the deadlock in the ’75 minute. Gonsalvez shot out of the midfield crowd to get his head on a lofted ball from Lenny Kusina. Gonsalvez was able to flick his header past the on rushing MTA goal-keeper. After defending hard for the next six to seven minutes, Neal Usry was able to put the game out of reach with his goal in the ’82 minute to put Shattuck up 2-0. Jose Ojeda finished off the scoring for Shattuck in the ’89 minute with his right footed bending shot. The U18YS team will play in the State Cup final for the second year in a row in Isanti, MN. They will be facing a St. Croix team that also went undefeated in group play and scored the same amount of goals as SSM did in their group games. The State Cup final is scheduled for June 2nd at 9am.
U18 Girls 2012 Spring MRL Champs
After finishing the fall 2011 MRL season in second place, the U18 SSM girls set a goal to win the spring 2012 MRL season. As a team this meant to finish undefeated and untied. So over the course of four weekends playing 9 games the U18 girls accomplished their goal of finishing the MRL season 9-0-0 and Champions. The first weekend (March 24-25) was a long bus ride to Lexington, KY to play three games in less than 24 hours. Game 1 SSM 4:1 Lexington with 4 goals from Darian Powell. Game 2 SSM 4:0 Indiana Fever with goals from Darian Powell (2) and Karina Fredette (2). The shutout was earned by Skyllar Hughes. Game 3 SSM 2:0 Greater Toledo with goals from Darian Powell and Karina Fredette. Stos Behle and Skyllar Hughes shared the shutout. Game 4 was a rare single game weekend at home (March 31) with SSM defeating Pacesetters of Ohio 3:0. Goals were scored by Amanda Goulet, Karina Fredette and Kaelyn Korte. Stos Behle and Skyllar Hughes again shared the shutout. The second weekend of (April 13-14) was another rare weekend of home MRL games. Game 5 on Friday the 13 th SSM defeated Dakota Rev 4-1. After going down 0-1 in the 16 th minute of the game, the Sabres fought back scoring four unanswered goals – Powell on the stroke of half-time and Civanni Moss, Powell and Patterson finished in the second half. In game 6 SSM then defeated Eagan Wave 3:0 with three second half goals from Fredette, Patterson and Powell. The final weekend (April 21-22) of the season was a trip to Hebron, IN. On a cool breezy Saturday morning Game 7 was SSM 3:1 Ohio Elite. All goals were scored in the first half by Darian Powell, Kennedy Ulrich and Ashley Boitz. Game 8 which was the second game of the day SSM 6:0 Evansville SC saw another 4 goal performance this time from Kennedy Ulrich. Moss and Powell rounded out the scoring. Game 9 was a very early 7:30 am start on a cold and breezy morning. SSM’s opponent St. Francis Fusion (IN) came into the game fresh not having played the day before. St. Francis proved to be the strongest opponent during the spring campaign. SSM went up 1:0 in the 22 nd minute on a Justy Linton header from a Civanni Moss corner kick. The joy was short lived though as St. Francis equalized 3 minutes later from an indirect free kick from 12 yards out. Karina Fredette scored the winning goal from a solo run in the 68 th minute. For the last 20 minutes of the game SSM’s superior play and fitness proved too much as they created several additional chances to put the game out of reach. “It was great to finish the spring MRL season as undefeated champions” exclaimed Head Coach David Linenberger. “The girls really rose to the occasion in this last game and showed we are a class above the rest. Their attitude and play was outstanding this whole campaign!” “This is the momentum we need to carry us into our State Cup run” said an excited captain Dani Patterson. “We’re going all the way this year!”
