Theater
Our students love to perform.
Not only are there three major theatrical productions each year, Shattuck-St. Mary’s offers a comprehensive training program that serves students interested in theater after high school.
Our drama classes focus on key areas such as development of the actor’s instrument, collaborative creation of original work, text analysis, scene work, and improvisation. Students study and perform a broad range of theatrical literature, from early Greek and Shakespeare to contemporary playwrights. Actors have both formal and informal opportunities to perform in: class, small scene presentations, our one-act play series, and our three yearly full stage productions.
All performances take place on campus in historic Newhall Auditorium at Shattuck St. Mary's School, 1000 Shumway Ave, Faribault, MN 55021.

After a polar bear sits on Clean Collar Sam, he tells Mrs. Murphy in his semi-final breath that his boardinghouse must go to Little Persia, his never-seen granddaughter. Since the town is frozen in by the harsh Alaskan winter, there is only one guest at the home, the despicable Belvedere Flinch. When the ice breaks, the ship bringing Lovely Little Persia docks with two more crooks: Bertha De Blues and Muggs. Spring is in the air as Tim Nolan of the Polar Bear Patrol immediately notices Little Persia, and romance beckons. Meanwhile, Bertha informs Belvedere that there’s been a gold strike, and soon the harbor will be filled with ships. Belvedere realizes that owning a casino would be ideal for his pocketbook, and devises an evil scheme to take possession of the chowder house with the help of Bertha De Blues and Muggs.

The Play that Goes Wrong: High School Edition

“It is opening night of the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society’s production of the 1920s murder mystery The Murder at Haversham Manor. Excitedly, Director Chris Bean welcomes the audience while the company is frantically making last minute changes to the set. As the play progresses, the actors struggle through disappearing props, missing actors, collapsing sets and more problems, all the while, they work to present the murder mystery. The longer the play goes on, the worst things get. What will happen? Will the murder be resolved in the face of the play going wrong? ”
Beets

“At the height of WWII with a frantic need to produce food, yet faced with a critical shortage of labor, American farmers were compelled to accept help in their fields from prisoners of war. While farmers’ sons fought men just like them in trenches and tanks in Europe, the presence of these POWs in rural America led to plenty of emotional conflict at home. Isabelle Hunt knows her husband Fred needs help with their beet crop, so he grudgingly allows German POWs from a camp nearby to work the family’s fields. Fred is furious over the food and privileges the POWs get, especially while the Hunts’ injured son is a POW overseas and may be starving to death. When their lovely 17-year-old daughter Anna meets the handsome and intelligent German soldier Dieter, there is mutual attraction -- and plenty of wrath from Fred. This is the story of small-town humanity, the simplicity of rural life, the conflicts from economic desperation, and unrequited love. There is conflict for some, acceptance by others, and adjustments for all.
The Addams Family: School Edition

“The Addams Family is a comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family. It features an original story and it’s every father’s nightmare: Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family – a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.
