Our students love to create.
From the beginning levels to the most advanced, the Shattuck-St. Mary’s visual arts program is ready to support the artist within every student. Modeled after a college arts program and serving a wide range of students, the visual arts program at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School stresses personal creativity, production, and a connection to both the arts community and the world.
Beginning-level courses are designed to develop the creativity of the student and are challenging within a relaxed atmosphere that is open to experimentation.
As a student progresses through the visual arts, classes become more rigorous. Concept formation and skills development are supported by a more individualized curriculum that builds on the student’s personal strengths. Our goal is to enrich students’ lives through artistic development and appreciation. We are also committed to preparing a select number of our dedicated art students for challenging careers at nationally recognized art schools.
Every year, students have meaningful dialogues with visiting artists and teachers and enjoy field trips to the renowned art museums of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Interested students are encouraged to participate in various art contests and shows, both locally and nationally. Every class is supported by great facilities: a well-equipped pottery and ceramics studio, digital imaging studio, portrait studio, and a drawing and painting studio used for all 2-D mediums, including oil painting and expanded sculpture courses.
