FARIBAULT, MINN. - On Friday, June 23rd, 2021, more than 220 young men eagerly awaited to hear their name called in the 2021 NHL Draft, and eight former Shattuck-St. Mary’s boys hockey players heard just that.

By the end of the draft on Saturday, Mackie Samoskevich, Shai Buium ’21, Scott Morrow ’20, Vincent Iorio, Tristan Broz, Jackson Blake, Liam Gilmartin, and Andre Gasseau all took one step closer to their NHL dreams and became Shattuck-St. Mary’s 19th consecutive class to be selected in an NHL Draft.

Samoskevich, who hails from Newton, Conn., was the first former Sabre to hear his name called as he was selected 24th overall by the Florida Panthers in the first round. Samoskevich, who will play as a freshman at the University of Michigan this fall, notched 70 goals and 92 assists in his three years at SSM, playing in 166 games.

In Round 2, Buium, Morrow, Iorio, and Broz were chosen respectively. Buium, who graduated from SSM in May, was chosen 36th overall by the Detroit Red Wings after trading up from the 38th pick. Teammate, and fellow SSM graduate, Scott Morrow followed closely behind, receiving the second round pick (40th overall) from the Carolina Hurricanes. Later in Round 2, Iorio and Broz, who were on the 2016-17 SSM Boys Bantam team with Morrow, were chosen by the Washington Capitals (55th pick) and Pittsburgh Penguins (58th pick) respectively.

Blake, Gilmartin, and Gasseau rounded out the SSM picks, chosen 109th (Carolina Hurricanes), 167th (San Jose Sharks), and 213th (Boston Bruins) overall.

“We are so proud of these eight Sabres being selected in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft,” stated Ben Umhoefer, SSM Director of Hockey. “They all made a positive impact on our school and hockey program and have worked extremely hard for this honor. We look forward to watching them continue to pursue their dream of playing in the NHL.”
