Girls U19 Hockey
The Shattuck-St. Mary’s Girls U19 hockey team is the newest team at SSM, currently in its fourth season. The Sabres captured the 2023 USA Hockey Girls High School National Championship in just its second season in existence. The team competes in a rigorous seven-month schedule, averaging 50-55 games a season, with tournament play throughout the United States and Canada. Players have accepted offers to play at the NCAA Division I and Division III levels in each of the past two years.
Student-athletes are on the ice five to seven days per week and each participates in a year-round strength and conditioning program. Players have access to two NHL regulation-sized arenas and a 3v3 ice rink, a 10,500 sq. foot weight training and conditioning facility, video room for team and individual analysis, as well as an athletic training room providing advanced aquatic therapy and full-time athletic training staff.

Sarah Murray '06, Girls U19 Head Coach

Sarah Murray '06 joined the Sabres in the fall of 2023 after spending the last four seasons at the helm of the St. Mary’s University women’s hockey program in nearby Winona, Minn. Under Sarah’s tutelage, the Cardinals finished third in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and advanced to the conference playoffs in 2021-22. That same year, Sarah led St. Mary’s to the most wins in a single season since 2003-04.
Prior to St. Mary’s, Sarah spent four years as the head coach of the South Korean National Team including leading the Unified Korean National Team at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.
Sarah is no stranger to Shattuck-St. Mary’s, as she is a 2006 graduate of SSM. She played seven seasons for the Sabres, capping off her career with back-to-back National Championships in 2005 and 2006.
After graduating from SSM, Sarah enjoyed a storied playing career at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where she won two NCAA Division I National Championships. She was a four-time WCHA All-Academic Team selection with the Bulldogs, and she currently ranks fourth in program history in consecutive games played (119) and ninth in total games played (153). Following her stint in Duluth, she went on to play professionally in Switzerland for three seasons.

Pete Johnson grew up in Madison, WI the son of the legendary University of Wisconsin, USA Olympic, and Stanley Cup Champion hockey coach “Badger” Bob Johnson and the younger brother of Mark Johnson, the leading scorer on the “Miracle on Ice” 1980 Olympic Gold Medal hockey team, Pete graduated from Madison Memorial High School, as a multi-sport athlete starring in baseball and hockey. He led the Spartans hockey team to two WIAA State championships. After High School he played a year of junior hockey in Falun, Sweden and tried out for the 1984 Olympic Team.
Johnson played four years at the University of Wisconsin for his dad, scoring 82 goals and 159 points in 154 career games and led the Badgers to the 1981 NCAA Championship his junior year. His senior year he served as captain and led the team in goals along with a NCAA runner-up trophy. He played some international hockey as a member of the USA National Junior team (1979) and USA National team (1983).
Johnson’s coaching career started as a graduate assistant at Bowling Green State University under head coach Jerry York and won the 1984 NCAA Championship. After he completed his Master’s degree at BGSU he became the top assistant coach at Cornell University for two years. He returned to the Badgers to become an assistant coach under Jeff Sauer and won the 1990 NCAA Championship.
He followed his dad to the NHL who was coaching the Calgary Flames at the time and became a scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs under GM Cliff Fletcher. He has coached at the youth and high school levels as well as Director of the Bob Johnson Hockey School in Vail and Aspen CO. Coach Johnson has seen the program win 7 USA National Championships between U16 and Prep teams.
He is married to his wife Sally and has three grown boys Craig, Keith and Erik and four grandchildren.
