Sean Bushey, Boys U19 Head Coach & Director of Boys Soccer

Email: sean.bushey@s-sm.org

I joined Shattuck-St. Mary's School as the Director of Boys Soccer in November of 2016, arriving from Colorado where I served as the Director of the Senior Academy for the Colorado Rush. Previously I spent twenty years coaching at the collegiate level, seventeen years of which I was at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington, which also provided opportunities to coach in the USL, work with Region IV ODP as a head coach, and come alongside the local club, Spokane Shadow, as their Director. This soccer coaching journey has taken place over four different decades and has taught me many things, most of which I would not have predicted as I ended my collegiate playing career at Belhaven College.

I entered into the coaching profession as a 22-year-old, mostly because I wanted to continue to be in and around this great game, and I wanted to keep competing. Now, a few decades later, I still carry those traits but I now see the additional, greater value of being able to come alongside young people to help support, guide, mentor, and lead them along their life's journey, teaching them that all they have to be is themselves, to do their very best, and to give what they have to others. This is what will bring lasting joy, and this is what will bring meaning to their commitment and drive to play soccer. This is also what brings purpose and joy to my coaching, leading, and directing.

SSM allows this to come to the forefront each and every day. I have earned my master's degree (Eastern Washington University, 1992). I have earned my USSF "A" License (1996). I have earned my USSF Academy Director's License (2018). Each has certainly helped me along my coaching journey, but not near as much as the players and coaching colleagues I have met along the way. And, certainly not as much as my wife, three sons and two grandchildren continue to help and teach me each day.

I joined the Boys Soccer Center of Excellence at the end of March 2022 as the assistant coach for the U19 and U16 teams. Before coming to SSM, I played Division I soccer at the University of New Mexico, Florida Gulf Coast University, and most recently I completed my eligibility at Gonzaga University in my hometown of Spokane, Washington.

I earned my bachelor’s degree in communications from FGCU and I am currently working on my master’s degree in organizational leadership through Gonzaga, which has already provided me with valuable tools to pursue my passion of coaching.

Coaching soccer is a deeply rooted tradition in my family.  My oldest brother is a coach, my uncle is the coach of a professional team in Colorado, and my dad is the head of SSM’s Boys program. So, I was never far from the coaching realm of the game.

After graduating from GU, I trialed with the Colorado Rapids 2 and FC Tucson, ultimately the dream of playing professionally did not come to fruition for me, but my true dream of coaching elite level athletes has. I feel incredibly blessed to be able to be at Shattuck and help lead young people towards the next stage of their lives. I hope to give each player here an incredible experience that they can take forward in their lives no matter if that is in soccer or in another field of interest.

My family has been an incredible influence in my life and my coaching desire. My dad and uncle were both integral in my growth as a soccer player and led me to become the person I am today, both as a coach and player. I hope to be able to instill the same drive and passion that they did for me with the players that I get to work with each day.
