Sweep 16! U16 Hockey Teams Win National Championship!

The Boys U16 and Girls U16 Hockey teams won the 19th and 20th USA Hockey National Championship in the Shattuck-St. Mary’s history.

Buffalo, NY- The Boys U16 hockey team defeated Detroit Honeybaked 7-0 on Monday morning in Buffalo, NY to win the school’s first ever national championship at the Boys U16 level. Three hours later Green Bay, WI, the Girls U16 team won it’s third-straight national championship beating The Chicago Young Americans 3-1. 

The Boys team lit up the scoreboard all weekend long outscoring opponents 43-4 throughout the six games. Despite playing more games than the rest of the field, SSM conceded the fewest amount of goals. Their championship outburst of seven goals featured six different goal-scorers as well as the team’s third shut-out of the tournament.

Green Bay, WI- The Girls U16 team secured their third-straight national championship in a much more dramatic fashion than the Boys team. Trailing 1-0 with under six minutes to play in the game, the Sabres scored three goals in the final 5:45 to win. For the SSM girls, the story was defense as they allowed only six goals throughout the tournament.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s students got in on the fun taking a fan bus to Green Bay at 4:00 am to watch the Girls Prep and Girls U16 teams compete in the finals. Chants of “Let’s Go Sabres!” could be heard all throughout the arena.
