Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is the 9th episode in the sensational Star Wars saga. On December 20th, Episode IX’s release marks the third and final installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Sadly, for many fans out there, this will almost definitely be the final episode in the nine-part Skywalker saga. Actor John Boyega, who plays Finn in this trilogy, said he feels, “This is the war to end all wars in this movie.” The anticipation for Episode IX is intensifying as we get closer and closer, causing many fans to ask questions about the plot, the meaning of the title, and the characters.

In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams begins Episode IX approximately a year after the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Our heroes and the last survivors of the Resistance escaped from the First Order and Kylo Ren. This was due to the heroic actions of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, which ultimately led to his death. In Episode IX, we once again find the Resistance facing off against the dreadful First Order. Additionally, it will reach the peak of the constant struggle between the Sith and the ‘Jedi’. However, many fans are confused as to what we should actually call our beloved ‘Jedi’. Since in Episode VIII we saw the end of the Jedi Order with Jedi Legend Yoda and Luke Skywalker both in agreement that the Jedi Order must end. As they then destroyed the Jedi Temple and of course the last Jedi, Luke Skywalker, dying. This has led to many fans questioning the meaning of the title of Episode IX. Such as: is Skywalker the new name of a new order led by Rey or could it mean that Rey has Skywalker blood in her and that she will rise? Or, is it Kylo Ren who will be the one rising due to the fact that we know he has Skywalker blood?

Director J.J. Abrams gave us the theme of Episode IX as according to the Collider he explains that, “This movie is about the new generation. What they’ve inherited, the light and dark, and ask the question about facing the greatest evil: are they ready?” We could see this theme being backed up via the trailers release. A sight that shocked many fans was a surprising image of Rey who has been our hero so far, but she didn’t look like herself as she had black cloak and wielded a red double-sided lightsaber, many calling her ‘Dark Rey’. This has caused a lot of concern as we wonder has she turned to the dark side or is it simply a vision that she has where she sees what becomes of her is she succumbs to the dark side? Another theory is that she is trying to go against the usual stereotypes of lightsaber color as the red lightsaber is known for being the color choice of the dark side and blue/green the choice of the light side.

Ultimately, with the finale of not just this trilogy but, the finale of the Skywalker Saga as a whole expectations are higher than ever. Fans are demanding an ending of this prestigious Star Wars Franchise that we’ll never forget. With this final episode not too far away many wonder what is next to come for the Star Wars franchise. If you think they’ll continue this storyline it is almost certain that they will not, but instead begin a new trilogy that is completely separate from the Skywalker Saga as it will lead us to a different part of the galaxy. It is being led by directors David Benoiff and D.B. Weiss, known for their hit TV show Game of Thrones, a trilogy which is set to be released in December of 2022, 2024, and 2026.
