Four Shattuck-St. Mary’s girls hockey alums were announced to the U.S. Women’s National Team on Friday, Dec. 13, after the conclusion of the tryouts for the 2019-20 Rivalry Series.
Amanda Kessel ’10, Natalie Buchbinder ’17, Clair DeGeorge ’17, and Aerin Frankel ’17 will represent the red, white, and blue against Team Canada in the opening two contests of the series. The first game will take place tomorrow (Dec. 14) at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. at 7 p.m. ET and will be televised live on NBC Sports Network. The two teams will face off again on Tuesday, Dec. 17 in New Brunswick at 6:30 p.m. ET with coverage on the NHL Network.
While Kessel is no stranger to the U.S. Women’s National Team, former teammates Buchbinder, DeGeorge, and Frankel will make their U.S. Women’s National Team debut in the Rivalry Series – an opportunity their former coach (and current Director of Girls Hockey) Gordie Stafford knows they won’t take for granted.
“Buchbinder is a testament to how a love and passion for the game - and a relentless will to improve - pays off for those who have the competitive nature to endure the ups and downs of a highly competitive environment. DeGeorge is a student of the game who pushes herself to compete with and be the best. She combines the exact balance of skill, imposing presence, and grit that elite teams need to win. And Frankel…she is a fighter, and among the most competitive people I have ever coached. She plays like she has something to prove all the time. She is a fully invested, genuinely kind and generous teammate,” stated Stafford.
After the December games conclude, the Rivalry Series will resume in February as the two teams will play three more games in Victoria, B.C., Vancouver, B.C., and Anaheim, Cali.
