Head of School Anticipates Commencement 2020

May 21, 2020

Head of School Matt Cavellier says goodbye to the seniors of the class of 2020.

Greetings from Faribault!

Well, here we are: the last Whipple Weekly of 2019-2020. Last night was our Upper School Awards ceremony, today, the link to our Middle School Moving Up Ceremony goes live, and tomorrow night at 7:00pm CT, we celebrate the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Class of 2020.

The last eight weeks have been an exercise in humility, a recognition of the importance of grace, and a complete dedication to the notion that it takes a village to accomplish our goals. We are lucky enough to have villagers from all over the world, with myriad skillsets and motivations. And whether these villagers be faculty, staff, parents, students, alumni, or friends of SSM, it is through the determination of all of us that we come together in celebration of a spring term like no other.

Seniors, tonight is your last night as high school students; savor it. Tomorrow, have your toast glasses ready and your loved ones beside you as we come together as a community, despite our physical distances. While it is not the North Chapel Lawn, you are in for a real treat. Thank you for continuing to move through your commitments to Shattuck-St. Mary’s with the humility, grace, and dedication we know to expect from you. We are so very proud of you. (That goes for you too, families of seniors!)

And for our students in grades 6-11 (and their families), we are proud of you, too. We are iterating plans for your safe return to campus in the fall, and we very much look forward to seeing your return through the Arch.

Stay healthy and safe.
