The Racer with Heart Award is presented to one male and one female each year who most represent the core values and mission of the Minnesota High School Cycling League, which are to be equal and inclusive, while building strong bodies, strong minds, and strong character through cycling. League staff member and award presenter Josh Kleve said that Claire has, “shown us what living out these core values really looks like. It has nothing to do with the podium; it has everything to do with living out those values.”
“We are incredibly proud of the recognition that Claire received after her first season riding in the National Interscholastic Cycling Association league,” said Michele Cornish, Athletic Director at SSM. “Claire is passionate about working hard and making sure that her teammates feel included and encouraged at all times. I can’t wait to see what she does in the future.”
This year’s virtual award ceremony was held on November 7, 2020, or you can read what Kleve had to say about Claire below:
“Our first Racer with Heart may be our youngest, and that’s an accomplishment in and of itself. If you want to know how everyone on the team is doing, just ask her. If you’re feeling down, don’t worry; she’ll be right there to cheer you up. Have you not taken your turn to pull the train during a Peloton? She’ll be there to cheer you on and make sure you’re pulling your own weight. If you’re new to the team, don’t worry; you have an instant friend. To her, this was ‘our team,’ and everyone was welcome. No matter what was going on in this individual’s life, she was always there to lend an ear, to be a friend, and to help out whenever she could, which is pretty impressive for a 6th grader. So, when you need a little more motivation on that last hill repeat…Claire Wisdo will be there motivating you from the top of the hill. I want to congratulate Claire on being our 2020 Racer with Heart Award Recipient.”
The Minnesota High School Cycling League is a non-profit youth development organization with over 2,000 student participants in 6th to 12th grade. Along with Claire, SSM student Kate Bittenbender ’25 also competes with the Cannon Valley Composite Mountain Bike Team.
