Shattuck-St. Mary’s Holds Its 157th Commencement

May 29, 2015

Inclement weather required that the event be moved indoors.

Commencement Day 2015 for Shattuck-St. Mary’s required early morning weather assessments and flexibility for planning an indoor event - something that has not occurred since 2001. The Rt. Rev. Brian N. Prior, IX Bishop of the Episcopal Church in Minnesota and Shattuck-St. Mary’s President Nick Stoneman presided over the event, which also included a closing chapel service. The Class of 2015 includes 110 students from Vietnam, Ukraine, Canada, Thailand, China, Korea, Norway, Zimbabwe, Taiwan,Venezuela, Nigeria, and the United States.

Valedictorians were Yang Ding from Shanghai, China and Megan Masterson from Apex, North Carolina. Ms. Ding will be attending Swarthmore College and Ms. Masterson will be attending Case Western Reserve University.

Mary Lynn and Warren Staley were the commencement speakers. Ms. Staley is a lifelong educator and currently serves on the Habitat International Board. She urged the graduates to consider three important words for their lives – “learn, do, and be.” Mr. Staley is the former CEO and Chairman of Cargill. He told the graduates to always keep learning and to always expect change while encouraging them to develop their leadership skills.

Music was provided by Tres Bien members Dione Peterson and Grace Conklin.
