Service with the American Red Cross

September 23, 2015

As the SSM community approaches the sixth annual Hands Across Faribault on Friday, September 25 - we thought it would be good to hear from a few people on the topic of “service above self.” Our post today is from our Middle School Director, Ms. Trout.

My parents moved to Faribault when I was two years-old. Unfortunately, the storage unit where they had all of their belongings, burned to the ground while they were in search of a home. The Red Cross provided much needed house-hold items to help them get back on their feet.

As a child, every summer I took swim lessons provided by the Red Cross. Those lessons eventually led to becoming a certified instructor, and providing swim lessons to the next generation.

When the chance presented itself to serve on the board of the local Red Cross, I jumped.  The opportunity to give back to my community and help others, as my family had been helped, has been very fulfilling.

I have served on a number of committees including Service to Armed Forces, Water Safety, and I am a Past President of the Board. Presently, I am still an active member of the Red Cross Disaster committee. One day, I hope to be able to serve on a national disaster team. Until that time, I will continue to be there for my neighbors, as they were there for my family.
