BioScience students observe Dr. Joel Zamzow as he performs a simulated knee replacement operation on campus.

Dr. Joel Zamzow of Orthopaedic Associates of Duluth, Minn. visited the Shattuck-St. Mary’s campus on Friday, October 14 to perform a simulated knee replacement operation before SSM’s BioScience students in Fayfield Hall.

With the help of his wife, Kris, and Mike Robb, a surgical device specialist, Dr. Zamzow completed the surgery just as he would in his own operating room, complete with the use of his drills, hammers, and other hardware necessary to complete the procedure. Following the simulated surgery, several SSM BioScience students were even more convinced of their future careers as orthopedic surgeons!

Dr. Zamzow is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who earned his medical degree at the University of Minnesota before completing an internship and his residency in Grand Rapids, Mich.
