ScholarShift Stories: Introduction to Conducting

February 09, 2017

SSM Choral Instructor and Organist James Yao directs students on fundamentals of conducting during recent ScholarShift module.

What does a conductor really do?

Students found out precisely what it takes to lead an orchestra or choir under the direction of SSM Choral Instructor and Organist James Yao during a recent ScholarShift module.

Students met each Monday throughout the month of January and learned a series of skills during the sessions, which focused on gesture, musicality, communication, score reading and other fundamentals of conducting.

Yao also focused on the importance of communicating the proper tone and feeling of a piece, as the conductor leads an orchestra not only from a musical perspective, but from an emotional perspective as well.
