SSM students learn how DNA is processed and crimes are investigated during visit to the Hennepin County Crime Lab.

Members of The Major Center of Excellence got a taste of what goes into crime scene investigations as they visited the Hennepin County Crime Lab on Thursday, May 18.

Lieutenant Kevin Schwartz gave the students a tour of the Lab, shared the history of the department, and walked through how it functions.

During the visit, students had the opportunity to view the DNA processing lab and learn more about how investigators are able to link weapons to crimes, bullets to guns, and connect the dots in order to piece an investigation together.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office crime lab unit is one of six accredited crime laboratories in the State of Minnesota, and one of only four crime labs in Minnesota that provide forensic DNA testing. The laboratory places a strong emphasis on the investigation of property crimes, which account for 50 percent of its investigations.

Visit the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office for additional information.
