The first puck was ceremonially dropped in what is now known as the John R. Sumner Arena during a special pregame ceremony on Friday, October 13.
The ice arena affectionately known as the “Old Barn” was officially renamed after Sumner, the longtime Shattuck-St. Mary’s hockey coach who helped usher in the current era of program excellence, prior to the SSM Boys Bantam game against the Boston Terriers.
Sumner dropped the ceremonial first puck before the contest and also delivered a passionate pregame speech to the Bantam team. Following the festivities, SSM took home a 6-3 victory in the opener of a three-game series.
Sumner was also honored during Friday morning’s All-School Community Gathering, and at a special evening reception featuring several of Sumner’s family members and former players prior to the game at The Inn. The festivities took place during SSM’s Fall Family Weekend, where the School welcomes families to campus for a full slate of events and activities.
