Shattuck-St. Mary’s Pre-Conservatory Students Sweep Gustavus Adolphus Competition

SSM musicians capture all five finalist slots in the 2017-18 Concerto/Aria Competition

On December 4, 2017, five Shattuck-St. Mary’s Pre-Conservatory students filled all five finalist slots at Gustavus Adolphus’ Concerto/Aria Competition for High School Students. The five SSM finalists were selected from 25 candidates through an initial online, recorded submission. All five students participated in a live, judged competition at Gustavus on Monday evening.

Selected as the grand prizewinner was Kirill Nazarov ’20, a 10th-grade pianist from Blagoveschensk, Russia. He played the first movement of the Grieg Piano Concerto in A minor and was accompanied by his classmate Vinh Nguyen ’19, an 11th-grade pianist from Hanoi, Vietnam, who played the orchestral reduction on piano.

Also competing from Shattuck-St. Mary’s were Harrison Oh ’19, an 11th-grade cellist from Jeju-si, S. Korea, Maria Chirinos ’18, a 12th-grade violinist from Coro, Venezuela, Laura Aldana ’18, a 12th-grade cellist from Bogota, Colombia, and Cate Carson ’20, a 10th-grade violinist from Northfield, Minnesota.

Kirill will perform as a soloist with the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra on March 25, 2018.
