Tom and Jim Silkey have worked at Shattuck-St. Mary’s for a long time. Dating all the way back to their own high school years, they both had part-time jobs working in the kitchen alongside their older brother, Dan. The pair is passionate about their work, whether it be cooking or baking, and enjoy experimenting with a wide variety of recipes and trying new things. Jim, the head baker at SSM, competes in baking competitions from time to time and has earned several awards for his delicious loaves of bread and pastries, specifically his famous Super Bread. Tom, who is SSM’s executive chef, finds cooking inspiration in various recipes he sees, putting a unique spin on them to make his own creations.
Neither can recall exactly how they became interested in the food industry, but they remember how, growing up, their father nurtured a garden, and that they would use the fresh produce to make their own home-cooked meals. They also worked in the family restaurant, which is now where the current Signature Bar & Grill is located. Having been preparing food since they were little, the brothers continue to do what they love, which is spending time in the kitchen, and put many hours a day into making tasty meals and treats for the SSM community to enjoy.
This week, Tom and Jim have been working particularly hard to prepare a special meal for Christmas Dinner which we all look forward to enjoying. SSM has adopted the saying “All In” which describes the passion and dedication its members possess, and the Silkey brothers fit this description perfectly with their genuine love for their professions of cooking and baking. Bon appetit!
