ScholarShift Stories: Introduction to Sports Broadcasting

February 15, 2018

Participating students observe the broadcast production of a collegiate hockey game during a recent module.

On Friday, February 9, three students got to experience first-hand how a live sports broadcast works with BLC Studios of Bethany Lutheran College at a Minnesota State University, Mankato, women’s hockey game.

Led by Ms. Maschoff, students were able to see how a typical broadcast works in terms of preparation, camera set up, and many other aspects. Focusing on the technical side of the broadcast, students observed multiple positions in the production truck during the game including engineering, directing, and producing. An exciting 4-1 upset by MSU over sixth-ranked Ohio State University was an added bonus for the students attending.

BLC Studios is an award-winning, student-run production that is in its 17th season of broadcasting MSU hockey. This Saturday, the students will be producing a women’s hockey game on Fox Sports North (FSN) Plus.
