FARIBAULT, MINN - Following an illustrious playing career that included world-renowned fame, Shattuck-St. Mary’s alum and current Girls Prep associate head coach, Brianna Decker ’09, was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame as a member of the 2024 class during a special ceremony held in Pittsburgh, Pa. on Dec. 4.
Decker becomes just the 11th woman to be inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame. She is now the third SSM alum to receive the honor, joining her former linemates Monique Lamoureux-Morando ’08 and Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson ’08, who were in the 2022 induction class.
“Brianna was a fearless competitor,” Girls Prep head coach Gordie Stafford recalled. “She was always one of the first ones to show up at the rink and the last to leave. All the skill, passion, intensity, and intuitive excellence she brought as a player propelled her to the Hall of Fame.”
Decker was a staple on the U.S. Women’s National Team for 15 years, both at the U-18 and senior levels. She represented the USA in three Olympic Games, winning gold in 2018 in PyeongChang, South Korea, and silver in 2014 in Sochi, Russia, and in 2022 in Beijing, China.
Decker helped the US win six IIHF Women’s World Championship titles to go along with two runner-up finishes. She was also instrumental in leading the Under-18 squad to gold at the first two IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championships in 2008 and 2009.
Decker totaled 170 points (81 goals, 89 assists) in 147 games played as a member of Team USA. She was named the USA Hockey Bob Allen Women’s Player of the Year twice and was voted MVP of the 2017 Women’s World Championships.
As a four-year member of the Girls Prep team, Decker helped lead the Sabres to three USA Hockey Tier I Girls U19 National Championships as a student-athlete. She then went on to a storied career at the University of Wisconsin, where she helped the Badgers win a National Championship in 2011. She was a three-time All-American at Wisconsin and was named the 2012 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner as the top women’s college hockey player.
Since retiring from competitive play, Decker has committed to helping the next generation of women’s hockey players. She has served as an assistant coach for the US Under-18 Women’s National Team at four different IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championships, winning gold in 2020 and 2024, silver in 2019, and bronze in 2023. Decker returned to her alma mater in 2022 to join her former coach, Gordie Stafford, behind the bench for the Girls Prep team. In the first two seasons, she helped lead the Sabres to back-to-back USA Hockey National Championships.
“Brianna’s decision to coach at the youth level exemplifies her love for the game. Her dedication to the grassroots of the sport informs her desire to leave the game better than she found it. This is the true mark of a champion!” said Stafford.
