FARIBAULT, MINN. - Since its inception in 2005, the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Girls Soccer Center of Excellence (COE) has been one of the top programs in the upper Midwest, a standard they will continue to uphold with the hiring of new head coach Darian Powell ‘12.

Powell, who will return to the campus where she played high school soccer from 2010-2012, comes into the position with the announcement of the departure of current Director of Girls Soccer, Tim Aga. Aga, who joined the program in 2019 from Belgium, will be returning to his home country after leading SSM in three successful seasons.

“Unfortunately, our Visa does not allow my wife to work and, after exhausting every avenue, we made a family decision to return to Belgium,” stated Aga.

"Tim was the right person, at the right time, when we hired him three years ago,” said Michele Cornish, Athletic Director. “I know that the decision to leave SSM has not been an easy one. The whole Aga family embraced everything that SSM had to offer from the moment that they set foot on campus. In addition to his strong work within our girls soccer COE, Tim selflessly helped navigate all the challenges that we faced during COVID which was certainly a scary time for everyone involved.”

“My family and I are very grateful for our time at SSM,” proclaimed Aga. “The adventure we embarked on, three years ago, has been nothing but amazing. We as a family are grateful that we were able to experience this opportunity and look forward to the remainder of our time here at SSM. Thanks for all the support and our door in Belgium will always be open to welcome SSM visitors!”

With Aga’s departure, Powell will be a head coach alongside current SSM head coach Sue Vodicka, who combined have almost 40 years of coaching experience between them. Powell, who is a native of La Porte City, Iowa, comes to SSM having most recently served as the women’s soccer assistant coach at Northern Michigan University. Prior to, she played professional soccer in Iceland, and before that, was a star player at Marquette University.

“I recruited Darian to SSM originally after driving 3 ½ hours from Faribault to La Porte City, Iowa to watch her play. That night, she proceeded to score seven or eight goals and I was sold!” said Cornish. “Darian will be the first female soccer alumna to coach here at SSM. She was a decorated DI athlete, played professionally, and has college coaching and recruiting experience. She also possesses a masters degree in school counseling. Darian will bring a new level of game understanding, commitment, and passion to our soccer COE.”

Powell will begin working with the program part-time beginning on April 14th and will arrive full-time on campus by May 2nd, where she will be able to jump right into the program as the Sabres look to finish out their 2021-22 season strong.

“Shattuck holds such a special place in my heart - attending as a student was life changing for me and provided so many opportunities. I am so excited to come back as a coach to help develop players and be surrounded by such an incredible and supportive community,” stated Powell.
