On June 10, 2021, Michelle Nutescu ’21 presented her project, Differences in Neuromuscular Control Between Female Ice Hockey and Soccer Players, at the annual National Consortium of Secondary STEM Schools (NCSSS) Student Research Conference.

Roughly one hundred students from around the nation came together, virtually due to the pandemic, to present their projects and interact and learn from one another. Michelle’s project was presented as part of the Biomedical and Health Sciences category.

Dr. Maren LaLiberty, Director of the SSM BioScience Center of Excellence (COE), said “Michelle did an amazing job in designing her experimental protocol and collecting human subject data, especially during a pandemic! In addition, she is a skilled speaker and gave a very professional presentation. I was really proud that she represented Shattuck-St. Mary’s at this conference!”

While she attended SSM, Michelle pursued her passions for hockey and BioScience, contributing significantly to both Centers of Excellence programs as a rare double-COE student. This BioScience original research project allowed her to combine those two passions by looking into how different female sports may impact neuromuscular control and better understand if those difference impact ACL injury risk factors.

You can “meet” Michelle, and learn more about the BioScience program, in a brief video on our BioScience webpage.
