The Shattuck-St. Mary’s Girls Hockey Center of Excellence was well-represented at the 2024 IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship in Zug, Switzerland earlier this month.

In all, five current Sabres suited up for their respective national teams and two SSM alumni served behind the bench.

Maggie Scannell ‘24, Jordyn Petrie ‘24, Haley Box ‘26, and Mary Derrenbacher ‘27 donned the red, white, and blue for Team USA, with Scannell serving as team captain. They were joined by two familiar faces as Meredith Roth ’00 and current Girls Prep coach Brianna Decker ’09 served as assistant coaches for the American squad. For the first time ever, an SSM student competed as a member of the Czech team as sophomore Julie Jebouskova ‘26 represented her home country.

The US team went on a perfect 6-0 run in the tournament to win its ninth gold medal, defeating Czechia 5-1 in the championship. Maggie scored in every game and finished tied for the team-lead with nine points (five goals, four assists). Jordyn and Mary were right behind her with eight points each, while Haley finished with four goals, including the eventual game-winner in the championship to cap off an impressive showing in her world championship debut. Julie meanwhile helped the Czech team to their highest finish ever in the tournament, taking home second place.

Meredith and Brianna have now captured two gold medals as coaches at the event as the duo was also on the bench in 2020 when the U.S. won its eighth gold medal.

Girls Hockey Director Gordie Stafford had high praises for his players. “We see the work these girls put in day in and day out. It is great to see their hard work pay off. We are so proud to have them represent Shattuck-St. Mary’s on the international stage.”

Shattuck-St. Mary’s players have been on 10 gold medal winning teams, including all nine times that Team USA has won the event.
