Hockey Camps

Each day will include a morning skills session, an afternoon team play session, and an evening session that will consist of small area games or a full ice game. Also included are off-ice workouts, group activities, video sessions, and mental skill exercises. Throughout camp, players will receive feedback on and off the ice and will be given a packet at the end of camp explaining what we at SSM think a hockey player can work on. A member of our SSM coaching staff, or a guest coach, will run the ice sessions.

Few resident camps can compare in scope and setting to the renowned Shattuck-St. Mary’s School. The School boasts an expansive wooded campus and a complete athletic complex, including three hockey arenas, a state-of the-art athletic training facility, a domed indoor soccer field, six tennis courts, an outdoor ropes course, gymnasium, basketball courts, an all-weather track, and a newly-remodeled weight facility. Located in Faribault, Minn., just 45 minutes south of Minneapolis and the Mall of America, the entire 250-acre campus is designated as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.

Off-ice sessions balance hockey specific skill training with plyometrics, strength, and conditioning sessions. Team-building, leadership instruction, and group activities utilize all campus facilities including the track, athletic fields, soccer dome, and weight room.

Goaltenders are offered a discounted rate because this is not a goaltender specific camp. Goalies attending camp will be on the ice three time a day with their team. We do have a goalie instructor on staff that will be on the ice with each team. Our goalie coach is there to teach basic technique with stance, rebounds, puck handling, and skating. Our goalie instructor(s) will work within each goaltender’s ability level.

Housing is provided on campus in adult-supervised dormitory buildings. Semi-private rooms accommodate two or three players each. The buildings also include common areas for evening recreation and movie viewing. Meals are planned and prepared by Shattuck-St. Mary’s full-time chefs and dietitians. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in our newly remodeled servery area.

Can my child have his/her own room?

One of the values of dormitory life includes learning to appreciate and get along with others. In this regard, all skaters in the Summer Programs should expect to have a roommate (or roommates) for the duration of the summer session.

Can I request that my child room with a friend?

While completing the registration form, you will find a roommate request section. This does not constitute a guarantee, but will increase the chances that friends will room together.

How many skaters are assigned to a room?

Dorm rooms house 2 - 4 skaters. A resident adult dorm parent oversees the counselors and is available during the evening and all night.

How are dorm rooms assigned?

We try to make sure that skaters are assigned to dorm rooms that promote the formation of friendships and result in positive camp experiences. Skaters are roomed according to age, grade, and camp skating level. In most cases, rooms are composed of skaters enrolled for the same level. Our goal is to have roommates begin and end their camp experience together.

What are the dorm rooms like?

The combination of new and traditional dormitories bring historic buildings of almost 175 years old. Dorm rooms are very basic and designed to accommodate 2 to 4 skaters comfortably. Flooring and furniture has been upgraded in the last several years, but there is no air conditioning.  Some rooms have sinks, but no dorm rooms have toilets or showers.  Shared “bathroom” facilities are provided on each floor.  The beds are single size long.  *Please note that standard size sheets may be too short.  Skaters are provided a dresser for personal belongings and a small closet area to hang clothes.

If your child is staying for multiple weeks of camp, they will be able to stay on campus Saturday night. There is no additional charge for the Saturday stayover.

Here is what that time would look like:

2:00-5:00 p.m: Rest, shoot pucks, soccer, laundry, etc.

8:00 p.m: Meet in the lobby of your dorm
10:00 p.m: Lights out

11:00-1:00 p.m: Lunch open

Many campers will arrive by car, but some will need airport pickup and drop off.

If we are providing airport pickup and drop off at the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport, please schedule the arrivals before 3:00PM on Sunday. Departures should be scheduled on Saturday after 3:00PM for regular travelers, but travelers needing airport escort service (Ums) should only schedule flights after 4:00PM. If your flight is before these times, your camper may miss the final scrimmage for camp.  When travel reservations are made, please update the information in Active.  The link for active is http://campsself.active.com/ShattuckStMarysSchool.  This needs to be submitted at least 1 full week before the travel day to allow time for transportation to be organized and rides available.   

Depending on if your child flies as a regular passenger or an unaccompanied minor, a staff member will either meet them in the baggage claim or at the gate.

Some campers have traveled a lot on their own, are of proper age to fly without an UM ticket and do not need assistance. These campers can check themselves in for a flight, go through security lines, find gates and baggage claims, and are prepared to handle travel delays or flight changes on their own.

Unaccompanied Minor Information: Please check with your airline concerning fees for children flying under the age of 15.

Campers that are required to (or elect to) travel on a UM ticket will be fully supervised throughout their travels and do not need to navigate airports and deal with travel issues.

SSM staff information (name, address and contact phone number) for unaccompanied minor (UM) tickets will be provided to you closer to camp start. If necessary, you may use “SSM Camp Representative” with phone number 507-333-1693. Closer to camp start you will receive the updated staff information. You must change to the correct staff information before your son or daughter’s flight. Some airlines require name changes be made on the phone rather than at the check-in counter or at the airport on the day of the flight.

We ask that all airline baggage and unaccompanied minor fees be paid in advance for both arrival and departure flights.

The Health Service on campus is equipped to handle routine health care needs. A nurse is available “on-call” daily. She is available at other times for consultation and emergencies. Also, there is an athletic trainer in residence. In the event that urgent medical care is needed, a hospital with a full-service emergency room is within five minutes by car. A major medical facility, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, is one hour away by car.

NOTE: As prescribed by law, and by our responsibility for the personal welfare of each skater, the camp’s medical forms must be completed during registration and before the skater’s arrival on campus. If any required section is not completed, or if immunizations are not up-to-date, the camp reserves the right to cancel non-refundable reservations. Any skater with a chronic condition (i.e. asthma) requiring prescription medication, or a skater who has had a serious injury or illness in the past month, must have a physical exam and a letter from the examining physician okaying participation and explaining any limitations or treatments.

Proof of Health Insurance Coverage

We will need proof of health insurance coverage before your skater attends camp. In most cases that means uploading proof on our registration platform. 

*International Skaters:  If your health insurance company is not USA-based, or does not have a USA office with a USA address, you will need to buy health insurance coverage through a private broker that will cover your skater for the duration of camp. Most travel policies / agencies offer a health insurance option for purchase. 

Most camps strongly encourage campers to deposit all money and valuables in the camp bank for your own security.  You are allowed to draw out cash at specified times each day.

Campers may open an account with the camp bank at registration.  Deposits may be made by check, cash or credit card.  Any remaining balances are withdrawn on the final day of camp.  There is no extra charge for utilizing the camp bank.
